The fan stopped first.
Then the television blinked into darkness, and the refrigerator’s steady buzzing disappeared. For a moment, the whole house seemed to hold its breath.
My brother complained, but Mum lit two candles. We sat together and told stories. Without screens glowing between us, everyone’s face looked warmer.
When the electricity returned, nobody rushed to turn the television back on.
