The Unsent Letter

UNITED STATESSHORT STORY13

Clara

Clara wrote a letter to her former best friend, Lena.

They had stopped speaking after an argument over a group project. Clara believed Lena had blamed her unfairly. Lena believed Clara had ignored her ideas.

For three months, they avoided each other.

Clara’s letter was four pages long.

It explained everything Lena had done wrong.

Clara planned to leave it in Lena’s locker.

Before doing so, she showed it to her older brother.

He read the first page.

“Do you want to repair the friendship or win the argument?”

“Both.”

“You may have to choose.”

Clara became annoyed and rewrote the letter.

The second version apologised for everything, even things she did not believe were her fault.

That felt dishonest.

She wrote a third version.

This one said:

I felt hurt when you told the teacher I had taken over the project. I also understand that I interrupted you and rejected ideas too quickly. I miss being friends, but I don’t want us to pretend nothing happened.

Clara still did not send it.

Instead, she asked Lena to meet after school and read the letter aloud.

Her voice shook.

Lena listened without interrupting.

Then she explained her side.

They did not agree on every detail. Clara still believed Lena had embarrassed her. Lena still believed Clara had dominated the project.

But each understood more than before.

They did not instantly return to being best friends.

For several weeks, they simply greeted each other.

Then they worked together during science class.

Eventually, they began sharing lunch again.

Clara kept all three letters.

The first showed how badly she wanted to be right. The second showed how badly she wanted the conflict to disappear.

The third helped her say what was true without using truth as a weapon.

It was the only one she needed another person to hear.
