Marcus ran for class president with a simple strategy: promise popular things.

He promised longer lunches, fewer quizzes, and vending machines.

His opponent, Elena, promised monthly meetings and a system for reporting problems.

Marcus’s speeches received louder cheers.

He won easily.

Then students expected results.

The principal refused to lengthen lunch. Teachers controlled quizzes. Vending machines violated school policy.

Marcus avoided classmates.

Elena found him sitting alone after a council meeting.

“You promised things you could not deliver,” she said.

“I know.”

She helped him review what the council could actually change.

They organised student feedback, improved club announcements, and created a quiet lunchtime room.

The changes were less exciting than vending machines but actually happened.

At the end of the year, Marcus apologised publicly for his campaign promises.

The next election, he ran again.

His new slogan was:

LESS PROMISING. MORE REPORTING BACK.

He lost to Elena.

She appointed him communications officer.

Marcus learned that leadership was not winning attention by describing an impossible future.

It was helping people understand what could be done, what could not, and what happened after they trusted you.
