The Red Thread

Grandmother ties a red thread around my wrist before every journey.

She knots it twice
and says a prayer too softly for me to hear.

At the airport, surrounded by screens and steel,
the thread looks small.

Still, I touch it during takeoff
and feel the distance shorten.
