The New Student’s Map

When Omar transferred schools, he received a printed campus map.
It showed classrooms, laboratories, offices, and toilets.
It did not show where students actually went.
On his first day, Omar ate lunch alone because the cafeteria map did not explain which tables belonged to which groups.
He arrived late to science because the shortest hallway was always blocked by older students.
He decided the official map was incomplete.
Omar began drawing his own.
He marked the quiet staircase, the water fountain with the coldest water, and the bench where students could sit without joining a game.
He labelled one corridor AVOID AFTER RAIN: ROOF LEAKS.
A classmate saw the map and asked for a copy.
Soon, students added notes.
Library back table has charger.
Best place to ask Ms. Hana questions: before morning registration.
Do not buy juice after Thursday.
Some notes were useful. Others became jokes.
Omar created rules: no insults, no secret information, and no marking places where students hid from teachers.
The school counsellor discovered the map.
Omar expected trouble.
Instead, she asked whether new students could receive it during orientation.
They created a cleaned-up version together. Students contributed tips about clubs, support services, and places to find help.
The official school map still showed buildings.
Omar’s version showed experience.
At the end of the year, another transfer student approached him.
“Where do I sit at lunch?”
Omar unfolded the map.
Then he decided the map was not enough.
“Sit with us.”
He had created the guide because he felt lost.
Its most important feature turned out to be the one he could not draw: someone willing to walk beside you.
