When I was small, Grandmother tied a red ribbon around the youngest mango tree.

“This one will grow with you,” she said.

Now its branches reach above the wall.

Grandmother walks more slowly,
but each summer the tree gives us fruit.

Some promises are kept quietly,
one season at a time.
