The Last Mango of Summer

INDIA11SHORT STORY

Arjun

Arjun and his sister fought over the last mango.

Both claimed they had eaten fewer during the week.

Their grandmother took the mango and locked it in a cupboard.

“You will receive it when you solve the argument.”

They created charts, interviewed family members, and searched the rubbish for mango skins.

The evidence remained unclear.

Eventually, Arjun proposed cutting it in half.

His sister refused because one half would contain the seed.

They weighed the pieces and discovered the seed-side was heavier but contained less fruit.

Grandmother laughed at their seriousness.

They finally made mango yoghurt and divided it equally into bowls.

By then, the argument had lasted so long that neither cared much about winning.

Arjun noticed Grandmother had not eaten any.

They combined part of each serving and gave it to her.

The last mango became three small desserts.

It tasted better than either sibling expected.

Fairness, Arjun learned, was not always finding proof that you deserved more.

Sometimes it required changing the form of the thing being divided.
