We climbed until the houses looked like toys and the cars became beetles.

At the top, Dad asked, “Was it worth it?”

I wanted to say no because my legs hurt and my shoes were muddy.

Then the clouds opened, and sunlight poured across the fields.

“Yes,” I said, pretending I had never doubted it.
