Something About Winter

Winter removes the unnecessary.

Leaves, birdsong, long afternoons—
all gone.

What remains is the black shape of each tree,
the honest road,
the lake holding its breath.

In summer, the world introduces itself loudly.
In winter, it waits
to see whether you will stay.
