At twelve exactly, the books woke and began rearranging themselves. Mysteries hid their final chapters. Dictionaries argued about definitions. Cookbooks released the smell of warm bread.

The librarian handed me a lantern.

“Choose carefully,” she whispered. “Some stories read you back.”
