The lift stopped between floors.

For thirty seconds, nobody spoke.

A businessman stared at the buttons. A toddler began to cry. An old woman reached into her bag and offered everyone sweets.

When the doors finally opened, we stepped out together.

By the lobby, we were strangers again.
